Pneumatic Cylinder – Industrial Automation & Motion Control
A Pneumatic Cylinder is a mechanical actuator that converts compressed air energy into linear mechanical motion. Pneumatic cylinders are widely used in industrial automation and machinery for pushing, pulling, lifting, clamping, positioning, pressing and other repetitive linear-motion applications.
Also known as an air cylinder or pneumatic actuator, a pneumatic cylinder typically consists of a cylinder barrel, piston, piston rod, seals and end covers. Depending on the design, compressed air moves the piston to produce controlled linear movement.
Types of Pneumatic Cylinders
1. Single Acting Pneumatic Cylinder
A single acting cylinder uses compressed air to move the piston in one direction, while a spring or external force returns the piston to its original position.
2. Double Acting Pneumatic Cylinder
A double acting pneumatic cylinder uses compressed air on both sides of the piston to provide controlled movement in both directions. It is commonly used in automated machinery requiring powered extension and retraction.
3. Compact Pneumatic Cylinder
Compact cylinders have a shorter overall construction and are suitable for applications where installation space is limited.
4. Rodless Pneumatic Cylinder
Rodless cylinders provide linear movement along the cylinder body without a conventional externally projecting piston rod and can be useful where long strokes or space considerations are important.
5. Guided Pneumatic Cylinder
Guided cylinders incorporate additional guidance to improve resistance to side loads and help maintain controlled linear movement.
